This collective naivety in favor of a blind faith in the human being, fades away what distinguishes us and what makes the other interesting or mysterious. This lack of nuance and insight prevents any form of difference, comparison or confrontation, even in the precise and detailed evaluation of the enriching or destructive effect of things. Jan Kiefer’s works go further and imply that, as with electricity, where there is tension between negative and positive poles, nothing can exist without its opposite, or at least diversity and contradiction are also inherent in everything. In his exhibition, such fundamental opposites as day and night, beginning and end, good and evil, are depicted with their numerous and subtle nuances. An expressively painted cross reflected in water shows its opposite in the mirror image. The Christian religion and its various interpretations, up to Satanism, the most radical opposition to it, implies the impossibility of a general, homogeneous love. The will to the “absolute good” is one-sided and limiting. In the past, humanity has experienced its worst mistakes in mass movements with simplistic ideals and naive attempts at a solution. In recent decades, the culture of discussion has deteriorated and criticism is usually expressed only cautiously. Opinions are either diffuse or extreme, everything can be lovable, is given the same value and thus prevents differentiation. The artist’s saying “alle lieben alles” (trad. everybody loves everything) points to this dull, comfortable homogeneity. Those times of relief transforming in vulnerable indifference. Les oeuvres de Jan Kiefer vont plus loin et laissent entendre que, comme dans le cas de l’électricité, où il existe une tension entre les pôles négatifs et positifs, rien ne peut exister sans son contraire, ou du moins que la diversité et la contradiction sont également inhérentes à toute chose. Dans son exposition, des opposés aussi fondamentaux que le jour et la nuit, le début et la fin, le bien et le mal, sont représentés dans leurs nombreuses et subtiles nuances. Une croix peinte de manière expressive se reflétant dans l’eau montre son contraire dans la réflexion. La religion chrétienne et ses diverses interprétations, jusqu’au satanisme, l’opposition la plus radicale à celle-ci, implique l’impossibilité d’un amour général et homogène. L’aspiration à un “bon absolu” est unilatérale et limitante. Dans le passé, l’humanité a vécu ses pires erreurs dans des mouvements de masse aux idéologies simplistes et aux tentatives de solutions naïves. In seiner Ausstellung werden so grundlegende Gegensätze wie Tag und Nacht, Anfang und Ende, Gut und Böse, mit ihren zahlreichen und subtilen Abstufungen abgebildet. Ein expressiv gemaltes Kreuz, das sich im Wasser spiegelt zeigt in der Reflexion sein Gegenteil. In der Christlichen Religion und ihren unterschiedlichen Auslegungen, bis hin zum Satanismus, dem radikalsten Widerstand gegen sie, zeigt sich die Unmöglichkeit einer allgemeinen, homogenen Liebe. Der Wille zum “absolut Guten” ist einseitig und limitierend. In der Vergangenheit hat die Menschheit ihre schlimmsten Fehler in Massenbewegungen mit vereinfachten Idealen und naiven Lösunsgungsversuchen erlebt. In den letzten Jahrzehnten hat sich die Diskussionskultur verschlechtert und Kritik wird meist nur vorsichtig geäussert. Meinungen sind entweder diffus oder extrem, alles kann liebenswert sein, erhält den gleichen Wert und verhindert damit Differenziertheit. Das Künstlersprichwort “alle lieben alles” weist auf diese dumpfe, bequeme Homogenität hin. Zeiten des Aufatmens werden zu Zeiten der verletzlichen Gleichgültigkeit. presents an installation that evokes forms and tropes of interior design and display, oscillating between concept store and dreamshop all while being explicitly made by the artist's hand. Since 2017 Tanay's practice has included printing, painting, and altering clothing. In his process, motifs and slogans are transferred onto vintage, found and deadstock clothing.
